Plakias Village

Plakias boasts a lovely sand and shingle beach complimented by calm, turquoise waters. Located approx. 40km south of Rethymnon and a favourite destination for experienced travellers, it’s easy to see why, with a beautiful beach hosting Tavernas serving fresh seafood. Plakias is your quintessential traditional Greek beachfront village.

The adventure starts enroute to Plakias as you pass through the impressive Kourtaliotiko Gorge with the small church of Aghios Nikolaos built into the Gorge itself. Plus you’ll pass a 40 metre high waterfall, before the road leads you to Plakias beachfront. In the center of village you will find local tavernas and bars.

The architecture is strongly influenced by the Venetians, who ruled the island in the past. This picturesque town is full of narrow alleys, elegant mansions, arches, and boasts a beautiful Venetian port. The port is hands down the most popular spot of the town! It is lined with cafeterias and restaurants, while the seafront promenade is perfect for evening strolls. Another vestige of the Venetian occupation is Fortezza, an imposing medieval castle that stands on a hill above the town.

The northern and southern coasts are fringed with beautiful beaches, such as Bali, Panormos, Adelianos Kampos, Plakias, and Agia Galini. The beaches are not the only standouts of the region, though. The inland holds many surprises: traditional villages, impressive gorges, and monasteries, such as Preveli and Arkadi.

Rethymno is the capital and the commercial centre of the prefecture of Rethymno located 80 km east of Heraklion and 60 km west of Chania. As Rethymnon has a university, it stays lively all year round.
